THE CASTELBUONO CIVIC MUSEUM JOINS THE ICOM NETWORK: A COMMITMENT TO ETHICS AND CULTURE

Since 2022, the Castelbuono Civic Museum has been a proud member of ICOM (International Council of Museums), the international organisation of museums and museum professionals dedicated to the conservation and promotion of the world’s cultural heritage. Each year, the Museum renews its membership, confirming its commitment to working in an ethical and professional manner, in line with the principles promoted by ICOM. Being part of this global network means operating according to international standards that safeguard cultural heritage, both tangible and intangible, and that promote accessibility, inclusion and sustainability. ICOM’s values perfectly reflect our museum’s mission: to be a permanent, non-profit institution serving society.

ICOM’s definition of a museum
During the General Conference in Prague on 24 August 2022, the new definition of a museum was officially adopted: “A museum is a permanent, non-profit institution serving society, which researches, collects, conserves, interprets and exhibits cultural heritage, both tangible and intangible. Open to the public, accessible and inclusive, museums promote diversity and sustainability. They operate and communicate ethically and professionally, with the participation of communities, offering diverse experiences for education, enjoyment, reflection and the sharing of knowledge.” This definition reflects the way in which our museum wishes to interact with the community and with visitors, creating experiences that go beyond the traditional display of collections, to foster a dynamic and stimulating cultural dialogue.

The benefits of the ICOM network
ICOM members enjoy numerous benefits, including free entry to a vast international network of museums, including those in Italy. ICOM cardholders are entitled to free access to the Museo Civico di Castelbuono, a small token of appreciation for those who, like us, recognise the importance of promoting and supporting cultural heritage. For further information on ICOM and the benefits for members, please visit the official ICOM Italy website. By joining ICOM, the Museo Civico di Castelbuono continues to strengthen its role as a cultural promoter and to reaffirm its commitment to the ethical, inclusive and sustainable management of heritage.
