The Civic Museum of Castelbuono, in collaboration with Ypsigrock Festival, presents Mirrors of Infinity, a new production by Ionee Waterhouse, a pioneering artist in the field of video mapping. The work consists of a digital video collage composed of AI-generated imagery, projected onto the façade of the Castello dei Ventimiglia during the 27th edition of the Festival.
This site-specific work is created through an original experimental approach that brings together art and technology. Across the four evenings of the Festival, the artist will perform a live digital performance projected onto the Castle façade: a combination of live painting, imagery gathered through research into the local area that responds to sound, and video collages generated using artificial intelligence.
Mirrors of Infinity stems from an original artistic practice that hybridises digital art and architectural space, 3D animation, generative art, and artificial intelligence to create a visual experience that offers a distinctive perception of space and time.
The innovative nature of Ionee Waterhouse’s work lies in the live execution of her projections: each evening of the Festival becomes a unique creative act, in which images are not only projected but also created and modulated in real time. This dynamic process allows the artist to engage directly and intimately with the audience, through an interplay of symbols, forms, and colours that merge to reflect not only the history of the place, but also to stimulate the audience’s imagination and perceptual awareness, at the intersection of music, art, and technology.
During Ypsigrock Festival (8–11 August), holders of full passes and day tickets will be able to visit the collections of the Civic Museum and the installation STRANIERI OVUNQUE / FOREIGNERS EVERYWHERE by the collective Claire Fontaine, with a reduced admission ticket of €2.
Biography
Ionee Waterhouse (Los Angeles, 1985; lives and works in Berlin) is a multifaceted digital artist recognised for her bold, pioneering innovations that challenge conventions and expand the boundaries of visual art.
Her passion for video art began in adolescence, leading her to study cinematography at the prestigious UCLA Film School in Los Angeles. She subsequently established herself on the international art scene, collaborating with renowned artists across a range of disciplines.
As a Video Jockey (VJ), Ionee has performed on some of the world’s most prominent stages alongside leading musicians. Her contribution to the field earned her the Best VJ Award at the Union Rock Show in 2016.
Alongside her live work, her video art has been exhibited in leading museums, galleries, and institutions across Latin America, the United States, and Europe.
A committed educator and mentor to emerging talent, she has collaborated with the Universidad Metropolitana in Caracas, Venezuela, where she introduced an innovative course dedicated to video art, VJ techniques, and colour psychology—the first of its kind in a Latin American university.
More recently, she served as Co-Director at SOU – School of Architecture for Children at Farm Cultural Park, fostering creativity and innovation.
During her 2018 artist residency at the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, Ionee had the opportunity to collaborate with and draw inspiration from some of the world’s leading musicians, further enriching her artistic perspective.
Actively involved in a range of cultural projects, in 2022 she was Artist in Residence and Ambassador for Farm Cultural Park at the 25th edition of Ypsigrock Festival.
Among her most recent projects is the large-scale video mapping of the Theatre of Dionysus, part of the Parthenon in Athens, presented during the 2022 concert Desmond Child Rocks the Parthenon.
