In the Contemporary Art section, seven vintage black-and-white photographs portray an unfamiliar Sicily—intimate, complex, and far removed from any stereotype. The images stem from Acque di Sicilia, the final photographic reportage produced by Lisetta Carmi in 1976: a gaze directed towards inland waters and the communities that depend on them, capturing an island that is both vulnerable and authentic.
The reportage, commissioned by the company Dalmine, was accompanied at the time by a text by Leonardo Sciascia—and remained for a long time outside mainstream publishing circuits. The seven vintage prints, from the Lisetta Carmi Archive, are now part of the Civic Museum’s permanent collection thanks to the project selected under Strategia Fotografia 2024, promoted by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture and curated by Valentina Bruschi.
