The Castelbuono Civic Museum is entrusted with the conservation and promotion of the area’s historical and artistic heritage; today, it serves as a centre for experimentation and the promotion of contemporary art forms, and stands at the heart of the history, civic life, culture and religious worship of Sant’Anna.
The Civic Museum of Castelbuono is housed in the evocative Castello dei Ventimiglia (1317), a medieval manor located 90 km from Palermo: an extraordinary architectural monument nestled between the Mediterranean Sea and the mountains of the Madonie Natural Park, a UNESCO Geopark site.
The museum preserves rich permanent collections displayed across the sections of Archaeology, Urban Planning, Sacred Art, and Modern and Contemporary Art: a continuously expanding body of works shaped by an experimental spirit and supported by an extensive programme of temporary exhibitions, as well as cultural and educational activities.
The Palatine Chapel of the “dei Serpotta” (1684) is entirely decorated with stucco on a background of pure gold leaf, created by the brothers Giuseppe Serpotta and Giacomo Serpotta. Its extraordinary decorative scheme is regarded as one of the finest examples of Sicilian Baroque, and it houses the sacred relic of Saint Anne.
The Museum promotes a wide-ranging cultural programme of temporary exhibitions, community-based projects, educational and environmental workshops, and collaborations with Italian and foreign cultural institutions.
The Civic Museum of Castelbuono is a municipal institution of the Municipality of Castelbuono (PA), established by resolution of the Municipal Council, with its statutes approved by Municipal Council Resolution No. 11 of 7 March 2002.
