THE CASTELBUONO CIVIC MUSEUM PRESENTS THE PROJECT TO ENHANCE THE MUSEUM SPACES OF THE CASTELLO DEI VENTIMIGLIA AND THE NEW EXHIBITION OF THE CONTEMPORARY ART COLLECTION FEATURING 40 ARTISTS AND THE ACQUISITION OF PHOTOGRAPHS BY LISETTA CARMI, SUPPORTED BY STRATEGIA FOTOGRAFIA 2024 \u2013 GENERAL DIRECTORATE FOR CONTEMPORARY CREATIVITY OF THE MINISTRY OF CULTURE

The reorganisation project, involving the rotation of works in storage and those recently acquired by the institution, forms part of a wider programme to enhance Ventimiglia Castle and its historic spaces, carried out under the supervision of the Superintendency for Cultural and Environmental Heritage of Palermo, which has involved the entire monumental site. The new museum itinerary focuses primarily on the Contemporary Art section, featuring works already in the permanent collection alongside recent acquisitions by 40 Italian and international artists. It has been designed to create a dialogue between the works in the permanent collection and the monumental space and historic rooms of the Ventimiglia Castle, with the aim of enhancing the public\u2019s experience of the heritage in accordance with accredited museum standards.
The display of contemporary artworks also extends to the Sacred Art section and the ticket office areas, as well as the ground-floor exhibition rooms, including the former stables, a space dedicated to temporary exhibitions. Particular attention has indeed been paid to accessibility and the digitisation of content, with the introduction of easy-to-read tools, simplified captions, high-visibility panels and QR codes linking to multimedia resources for both adults and children: a project that connects contemporary art and historical-monumental heritage into a more engaging museum experience for diverse audiences. The project forms part of the process of strengthening the Civic Museum as a cultural hub for the local area, always attentive to the dialogue between art, memory and the contemporary world, and for years now committed to building a shared cultural narrative based on the active participation of the community, in line with the guiding principles of the Faro Convention and ICOM (International Council of Museums).<\/p>\n

The new museum layout by AM3 Architetti Associati was designed and implemented in accordance with the principle of economic sustainability, through the reuse of materials from the previous layout, reallocated within a different spatial configuration.<\/p>\n

The redesign is the result of a collaborative effort involving Rossella Barreca, Vincenzo Barone, Stefania Cordone, Vincenzo Italiano (Sinergie Group srl), Maria Rosa Sossai and Annalisa Venturella, with scientific consultancy from Enzo Sottile and the collaboration of Claudio Ferri, PhD candidate in Mediascape \u2013 Transcultural Artistic Research and Production, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Palermo. Special thanks go to the lecturers at the Academy of Fine Arts in Palermo who contributed to the interviews accessible via QR codes in the exhibition: Alessandro Bazan, Francesco De Grandi, Gianna Di Piazza (Luigi Di Piazza Donation), Sandro Scalia, Martina Pecoraino (Pecoraino Archive) and art historian Gioacchino Barbera.<\/p>\n

T<\/b>he Contemporary Art Collection<\/b> The Civic Museum\u2019s Contemporary Art Collection was established in the second half of the 1990s with the \u201cLuigi Di Piazza Donation\u201d, a collection of figurative and abstract paintings and sculptures by predominantly Italian artists. The collection also includes the body of paintings by the Castelbuono-born artist Paolo Cicero (1878\u20131931) and a group of five sculptures donated by the artist Mario Pecoraino (1930\u20132019). In recent years, the Civic Museum of Castelbuono has consolidated its ongoing commitment to promoting and caring for its heritage through artist residencies, public commissions, site-specific interventions and educational programmes shared with the community.
During the 2000s, thanks to artist residencies, donations, collaborations with national and international institutions and the academic world, and with the support of the Ministry of Culture, the museum\u2019s collection has been enriched with new works. The works in the collection are thus an expression of an experimental dialogue between artists and the historical and cultural heritage of Castelbuono, and in many cases have also been created with the active participation of the community. The collection reflects the special relationship with Mediterranean culture through the use of contemporary artistic languages, including painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, cinema, theatre, video and digital art.<\/p>\n

To mark the reorganisation, the recent acquisition of a collection of seven black-and-white photographs by Lisetta Carmi (1924\u20132022) will be presented to the public. These are displayed in the museum\u2019s new section dedicated to photography and were acquired thanks to the \u2018Strategia Fotografia 2025\u2019 call for proposals issued by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture.<\/p>\n

The images, part of the project *Il viaggio in Sicilia* by Lisetta Carmi, curated by Valentina Bruschi, come from the Lisetta Carmi Archive and are taken from the last reportage ever produced by the photographer, commissioned by the Dalmine company in 1977 and included in a period publication, which has been digitised for the occasion and made available to the public, thanks to the collaboration with the Dalmine Foundation.<\/p>\n

Lisetta Carmi\u2019s reportage captures the Genoese photographer\u2019s ability to connect with places and people, revealing their strength, dignity and authenticity.
The opening will be accompanied by a presentation open to the public, curated by Director Laura Barreca, in the presence of representatives from the institutions and the team involved. This will be followed by a toast hosted by Cantine PLANETA.<\/p>\n

Biography of Studio Am3
<\/b>AM3 Architetti Associati was founded in 2011 by architects Marco Alesi, Cristina Cal\u00ec and Alberto Cusumano. The practice is based in Palermo and undertakes projects in both the private and public sectors, exploring the theme of urban regeneration through the design and construction of works situated within contexts of historical, archaeological and landscape significance. The analysis of the specific context in which each project is situated plays a central role in the design process: this critical assessment aims to identify the characteristics and distinctive features of the fragments that make up the sites. Initially isolated through analysis, these elements are then recomposed in a new and coherent way, establishing precise spatial relationships with the context at both a broader and a more detailed scale. From a design perspective, the studio seeks to accommodate the multiple tensions intersecting within the project areas by finding solutions that respond to the diverse needs arising from the site itself.
